In Thailand, there is a saying about children where “children are the future of the nation, and if the children are intelligent, the country will be prosperous.” Every year on the second Saturday of January, Thailand celebrates National Children’s Day to honor its young Thai citizens. Check out how Shangri-La hotels in Chiang Mai and Bangkok commemorated the special day.

On January 11, volunteers from Shangri-La Chiang Mai visited the Wat Lan Tong School, the hotel’s EMBRACE beneficiary that teaches underprivileged children from eight nearby villages. During the visit, colleagues prepared a meal and fun educational games for the children.

“All the activities the hotel provided also helped the children recognise the value and become proud of their society and culture,” said Saranya Buntem, communications manager at Shangri-La Chiang Mai. “At the end of the day, the hotel staff and students were full of happiness and joy.”

In partnership with Wat Suan Plu elementary school, which teaches children from low-income backgrounds, and the pediatric ward of Lerdsin HospitalShangri-La Bangkok observed the day with a One-Child-One-Gift campaign. Throughout the campaign, colleagues donated toys, clothing and other goods to gift to 350 children. The hotel exceeded its goal by collecting over 375 gifts.

Led by Caroline Cheah, general manager of the hotel, colleagues gifted the presents directly to the children during visits to the school and hospital on January 11. Hotel colleagues also provided a delicious lunch, played games and danced with the children.

“The children appreciated the gifts and were filled with love and happiness,” said Virinya Maytheepattanachat, director of communications at the hotel. “We will continue to give back, support and uplift the community.”
